Hattie R. Rosenthal College of Psychoanalysis
of Heed University

History

Heed University was established in Florida in 1970, and is one of the oldest, most experienced and prestigious non‑traditional institutions of higher education. We have pioneered alternative educational programs for over four decades. We are a founding member of the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis (NAAP) The program in psychoanalysis was implemented in 1974 and became The Hattie R. Rosenthal College of Psychoanalysis of Heed University in 1999.

Authority

Heed University, incorporated in Wisconsin, is a private, non‑profit, 501©3, non‑sectarian institution of higher learning. Our Charter grants Heed University authority to conduct programs and award degrees.

Hattie R. Rosenthal College of Psychoanalysis has developed a distinctive program in conjunction with approved psychoanalytic institutes. This program combines study at a psychoanalytic institute, flexible residency, and independent research. To complete the doctoral program, the candidate must meet requirements in these areas: psychoanalytic training, a minimum of 300 hours of personal analysis, a minimum of 150 hours of supervision, clinical experience, academic coursework, and research culminating in a dissertation or major project.
Requirements: the program consists of 80 credits, which may be fulfilled by a combination of transfer credits, advanced standing, seminars and independent study. A 20 credit dissertation (for the Ph.D.) written according to APA standards or a major project must be completed. In addition to meeting all the requirements of the psychoanalytic institute or its equivalent, the candidate must complete a minimum of 30 credits at the College of Psychoanalysis. Because candidates will have studied thoroughly both basic and advanced theory and practice at their institutes, guided independent scholarly research forms the main axis of the program, supporting the other requirements.

Purpose and Philosophy

Our goal is to make a doctoral degree in psychoanalysis accessible to adults with extensive academic and work experience, by offering a viable alternative to traditional programs. We wish to help in building a world in which people can live and work together across religious and cultural divides. Our philosophy encourages "freedom to learn" using a "university‑without‑walls" approach. It is our purpose to assist students in achieving their career and professional objectives while they continue to meet their work and family responsibilities. Students study for advanced degrees without a rigid, formalized structure. Students enjoy a wide range of academic and clinical experiences, limited only by their imagination and the personal goals they establish for themselves with faculty guidance.

Degrees Offered

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Psychoanalysis
Doctor of Psychoanalysis (Psya.D.)

Specialization

Students design their curriculum with an assigned Faculty Mentor, and select an area of concentration such as individual analysis, group analysis, eating disorders, gerontology, sexual dysfunction, drug addiction, families and children, suicidal patients, and the chronically and terminally ill, among others.

Structure

The program consists of individualized independent study under faculty guidance and supervision, combined with seminars and classes at approved centers of study. We work with psychoanalytic institutes of all disciplines. For example, the Center for Human Development (CHD), which trains candidates in Modem Psychoanalysis, has developed a curriculum to include courses which also earns students advanced standing credit towards their doctoral degree. Candidates may use specified CHD courses for independent study (for information about CHD, telephone 212‑642‑6303, or e‑mail CtrHumanDev@aol.com.) We welcome the development of such courses by institutes of differing schools of thought, such as Freudian, Jungian, Self‑Psychology, Gestalt, Sullivanian, Adlerian, and Object Relations, among others.

Performance‑Based Advanced Standing (PBAS) and Transfer Credit

PBAS is an assessment procedure used to determine the number of credits awarded to a student based upon career performance and prior learning experiences. We may grant academic recognition for appropriate and relevant experiences which will be evaluated for advanced standing. The Director will evaluate various other learning modalities on an individual basis.

Independent Study

Students may earn credit through a variety of activities, such as independent study projects, case studies, and advanced seminars and/or colloquia. Each student is assigned a Mentor who provides guidance and support of the student's program.

 GENERAL INFORMATION
It is our philosophy that mature individuals with extensive experience should be permitted the opportunity to study for college degrees without a rigid, formalized structure. The Heed program of "Freedom to Learn" provides this opportunity. Following a "University Without Walls" philosophy, students are permitted a wide range of activities to meet educational and personal goals they establish for themselves with faculty guidance.

Many men and women in the professions, education and business find that the study of law would be most useful in their work; contracts must be prepared and evaluated; lawsuits are an ever- present danger in the business environment; and trusts, estates and wills must be prepared. Indeed, law touches every facet of our lives. An understanding of legal principles is important not only for success in the professions and business, but also for the pursuit of life and happiness in our society.

INSTRUCTIONAL INFORMATION

Thomas Jefferson College of Law offers an independent study educational program that allows qualified individuals to earn a non-bar law degree.
